Job Summary
  • An Advanced Patient Care Extern will participate in this Externship to complete clinical hours as necessary for completion of their BSN Capstone course. Externs will provide patients with basic patient care with the assistance of nursing staff. The Advanced Patient Care Extern will work side by side with a designated RN preceptor for a patient, or a group of patients, for a designated time frame. During this time, the extern will provide care for these patients with assistance and supervision from the primary registered nurse. The Advanced Patient Care Extern position will be paired with a Nursing Assistant position.
    • The Advanced Patient Care Extern will:
      • Demonstrate leadership in providing and coordinating culturally competent, comprehensive client-centered nursing care while implementing current theoretical and historical knowledge of the profession of nursing.
      • Synthesize and prioritize information using intentional learning and reflection, while engaging in the creation and planning of a capstone project proposal.
      • Apply evidence-based knowledge and leadership skills as a professional nurse while proposing further avenues for evidence-based practice in nursing.
      • Demonstrate clinical reasoning and decision-making skills while incorporating theoretical, historical, cultural, and evidence-based knowledge into the decision-making process.
      • Demonstrate commitment to the future of nursing by exhibiting nurse leadership in the profession, as well as in organizational, local, and global nursing environments.
      • Communicate effectively and therapeutically, through technology as well as through written and verbal work and through the creation of a capstone project proposal.
      • Synthesize and demonstrate an accurate knowledge of professionalism with nursing care actions, in order to identify quality improvement measures when appropriate, and promote standard safe practices in nursing environments.
      • Demonstrate effective interprofessional and intraprofessional collaborative organizational teamwork and leadership skills to produce positive professional working relationships within teams, systems, and groups.
Job Requirements
  • Education
    • Required: Currently enrolled in last semester of an accredited Registered Nurse BSN Program
  • Experience
    • No prior experience required
  • Skills
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Exhibits valuable time management skills.
    • Strong analytical/problem solving skills.
    • Flexibility and ability to work in a multi-tasking environment.
  • Licensure/Certification/Registration
    • Evidence of successful registration in a Capstone nursing course in an accredited Registered Nurse program
    • BLS must be obtained within 90 days
