  • Job Summary
    • The Outpatient Coder III position is an expert Outpatient Coder and serves as a senior expert to Outpatient coding to less experienced Outpatient Coders. An Outpatient Coder is responsible for timely and accurate coding and abstracting of Outpatient records which includes Outpatient Ancillary, Recurring, ED, Same Day Surgery and Observation cases. As an expert Outpatient Coder, this position will also act as a mentor to less experienced coders. The Outpatient Coder III is responsible for reviewing and analyzing documentation present in the medical record for Outpatient cases to assign ICD 10 CM diagnoses and CPT 4 procedures based on the documentation in the medical record. The Outpatient Coder III has expert knowledge on all coding guidelines and Abides by the Standards of Ethical Coding as set forth by the American Health Information Management Association.
  • Job Requirements
    • Education
      • Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent 
      • Required: Completion of Coding Course
    • Experience
      • Required: 5 years coding experience with a coding certification (listed below) OR RHIT/RHIA OR Completion of CoxHealth HIM Coding Training Program with a coding certification
      • Required: Score at least 90% on CoxHealth internal coding exam
    • Skills
      • Must have the analytical ability to interpret data contained in medical records and assign appropriate codes for accurate reimbursement
      • Expert knowledge in CPT (Outpatient Procedure Coding) and ICD-10-CM (Outpatient Diagnosis Coding) classification systems
      • Expert knowledge of APC reimbursement and CPT-4 Modifiers
      • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present ideas and concepts effectively
      • Demonstrates competency with use of computers and various computer programs
      • Visual acuity necessary to read and decipher handwriting and electronic documentation
    • Licensure/Certification/Registration
      • Required: RHIT/RHIA OR CCS, CPC, CIC or COC with 5 years of experience (experience not required with completion of internal training program – see above)
